Coin Collecting as a Hobby

f_11310575301_imag0181.jpgMost people engage in different activities that they consider hobbies. When people consider a particular activity as a hobby, it means that people find that activity pleasurable in that they enjoy collecting different kinds of coins.

In this context, it does not necessarily follow that the coin collector will focus more on the monetary value of the coins. When the focus of coin collecting delves more into the monetary value of the coins than the gratification the collector obtains, it is no longer deemed a hobby but an investment.

History tells us that the main reason other generations collected coins was the value that coins would someday attain. The ancient form of coin collecting was even labeled a hobby

Scrap Books – Preserving Your Baby’s Special Memories

01310575744_il-430xn53956796.jpgHaving a baby is one of the greatest joys in life. Over the course of your baby’s life there will be events, stories, photos and special memories that you will want to preserve for future generations to enjoy.  Creating a baby and family scrap book is an easy and fun way to store photos and memorabilia for years. Scrap books can be as simple as photos and journaling, or much more elaborate.

If you have never scrap booked before it may seem a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be difficult.  Even if you didn’t start when your children were young, you can start any time.  Due to the increasing popularity of scrap booking over the last decade or so, supplies and ideas are widely available in stores and online.  The only items your need to get started are paper, photos, pens, tape or glue for securing photos and page protectors.  You can purchase ready to use scrap books or make your own.  (Archival quality supplies are not necessary, but your scrap books will last for many more years using them.)

More elaborate scrap books have stickers, buttons, ribbons and other decorations on each page.  These are beautiful and fun but take more time to complete.

When my sister’s house burned down and she lost all her family photos, I was determined to find a way to preserve and protect my family photos. I also discovered I had boxes of old family photos without words on the back describing the photos. I had to rely on my older relative’s memories to connect the pieces of my family’s history together.Whether you choose to create simple or elaborate scrap books, your book should always include journaling, writing what is happening in the photos.  It can be as simple as who, what, when and where.  These can be printed from a computer, but actually handwriting these entries give your scrap book historical qualities.

While everyone has their own choice, where colors for interior paints are concerned, it maybe a good idea to take a look at the effects that popular interior paint colors, like shades of white, blue, yellow and red, can have on your mood and the interesting interior paint color combinations that you can play around with.

White: White is very popular and can be used in any room. It is a neutral color and gives a peaceful feeling. White paint works especially well in bathrooms and bedrooms. White reflects maximum light and manages to create an illusion of space to open up a small area. White makes the room look airy and cool. But, it can also be difficult to maintain and might give your room a very hospital like feeling. Colors that make excellent combinations with white, are red and blue. These colors make the room look alive and inviting. Other shades of white, like off-white and pearly white are also very popular.

Yellow: Another popular color, yellow. Yellow gives a bright and cheerful feeling to a room. It is a warm shade and is commonly used in bathrooms and kitchens. Some popular shades of yellow, used in interior house paint colors, are pale yellow, bright sunshine and a warm shade that resembles a banana split. Combining sunshine yellow with white can brighten up any kitchen.

Brown: Another popular color is light brown, which suits bigger rooms. Brown gives a subtle masculine feeling to the room. Shades of brown like chocolate brown and dark brown look good on the walls. A good color scheme using brown is painting the ceiling beige and the walls a chocolate brown.

Blue: Painting the walls blue, gives a cool and tranquil feeling to the room. Blue is suitable for all rooms. It’s a common color used in several bedroom painting ideas as it makes the bedroom look peaceful. Some popular shades of blue in interior paint colors are soft grayish blues, lively turquoises and cool aqua. A good interior paint color scheme is medium dark blue with cream yellow.

Red: Red is among the most popular interior paint colors for homes. Red radiates vibrancy. Pink, a shade of red gives a romantic feeling to a room. Pink is very popular in room painting ideas for girls. Red is mostly used to accentuate a part of the room. Some popular shades of red, are watermelon red and light pinks. Dark red shades like burgundy can be painted, but use a flat or matte finish on dark colors. Paint one wall red and others off-white for a great color scheme. You can also try a combination of burgundy red walls with white furnishing.

Other colors like green and purple are not used as widely for interiors, but everything depends on an individual’s choice. A light green can give a fresh and outdoorsy feeling to your living room. Purple can give a feminine feeling and light purple is often opted for, when painting a girl’s room.

Interior Painting Ideas
For a DIY inexpensive texture paint on your wall, try sponge painting. Soak a sponge in wet paint and dab it on the entire wall. There are also rollers available in the market, which have different textures, which can be used to give different patterns to your walls.

For kids room painting ideas, paint different animals or cartoons on the walls. Look for different colored drawings of jungle animals. Paint a base color like light blue, on the wall and paint the figures and caricatures you want, using paint brushes.

Stencil art is very popular in interior painting ideas. A great kitchen painting idea with stencil art is to create many fruit stencil paintings on the walls. Another way to brighten up the interiors, is to paint one wall, off-white and then stencil a green flower plant on the wall. Paint the 3 remaining walls, a medium dark green color. For a delicate look, stencil the area below the ceiling on the walls with an intricate design. Always pick a color for stenciling, which stands out on the base wall. Stencils are easily available in many supermarkets and there is a huge variety from which one can choose.

You can also go funky, and paint your walls with stripes. Cream yellow with dark pink or turquoise blue are some good combinations for striped walls. For a stunning and attractive look for your living room, paint one wall black with bright multi-colored splotches and the rest of the walls, gray.

Rubber stamping is another fun and easy way to decorate your walls. There is a huge range of stamps available in the market. Decide on the design and color you want to stamp on your walls. After buying the rubber stamp, use a roller and practice rubber stamping on a white board. After enough practice, stamp on the walls to form an interesting border.

Faux means fake and with faux painting on your walls, you can create an illusion of any surface on your wall, like marble, wood, brick, etc. In this painting technique, a base coat is painted and a mix of paint and glaze is used to paint the details of the faux surface. Painting popcorn ceiling or stucco texture gives an attractive look to the ceiling. Other ceiling painting tips are to make faux paintings on the ceilings to give a feeling of sky, a chandelier etc.

Useful Tips
Remove things like switches and curtains before painting. Also, mend the wall for any flaws like holes, cracks, falling paint, etc.
Always get some paint samples and paint patches on the wall. Let them dry for a day and see which color you like the most. You can always get many different shade cards and place them on the wall to check for the suitable color.
Use a primer or sealer for more durability. They provide a base coat for the paint and conceal many stains like crayon, ink, soot, etc. You will have a long lasting paint on the walls, if you use primers and sealers.
It is important to choose the right interior paint for the right surface. Latex is a good choice for the kids’ room, as you can clean a wall with this paint easily. Latex paint are basically water based paints. They are non-toxic and non-flammable paints. The smell of this paint is less, compared to oil paint, but oil paints are the most durable and give a better finish.
Milk paint is eco-friendly. It is made of earth pigments and mild proteins. This paint works best on bare wood surfaces and the topcoat can be solvent based or water based.
There are different kinds of finishing coats, one can choose from. Flat finish is an ideal finish for a surface having many flaws, because it conceals the flaws. But it has no shine, can’t be cleaned and is not durable. Matte finish has little shine and is a little more durable than flat finish. This finish is semi-washable.
For bedroom wall painting ideas, choose satin or eggshell finish as they bounce soft light and have a decent amount of shine. They are washable and durable and are a good finish for any family room or bedroom.
Semi-gloss finish has a good shine, and the painted surface can be scrubbed. It is also very durable. Using semi-gloss finish is a good option for kitchen and bathroom painting idea, as these places are the most used areas in any house.

Ideas For Dry Embossing In Your Scrap-Booking Hobby

21310575719_12.jpgIf you, like me love the elegant look that you can get on your layouts by using dry embossing, here are some scrap-booking ideas for some easy ways to get that embossed look for your scrapbook layouts. Most scrap-booking enthusiasts that I know have done embossing on some of their layouts or used ready made embossed pages.
Embossing is a simple technique, and it has been popular for centuries, as it adds a slightly 3D look to your projects. It also adds some subtle texture and is great to use for card making and on heavier paper types. It is a popular technique to use on elegant pages in your scrap-booking album, like for instance your wedding day, or even a child’s christening. Dry embossing is a far simpler technique than heat embossing, so don’t get confused here. Heat embossing involves the use of inks, stamps and heat guns. Dry embossing involves simply pressing a design into card or paper to make a raised pattern on the other side.
If you have never done embossing before, it is a great idea to buy ready embossed card stock and paper to work with.

Steps To Take In How To Sell Coin Collections

11310574978_civilwarcoin.jpgThere are several steps that must be taken in figuring out how to sell a coin collection. There are many auction websites that allow individuals to more easily sell a coin collection online, although there are other ways in which an individual can sell a collection in more traditional methods. If the individual has been working on a coin collection for years then he will be thoroughly versed in the value of the different coins in the collection so that he will not have to do as much research to find a buyer. In addition, as a collector of coins, he will also be more informed about the different buyers on the market, having probably bought and sold to them during the course of collecting the coins over the years. First Steps For those who have not been a coin collector for years, how to sell a coin collection can be a very daunting task. Often a coin collection is inherited leaving the individual seeking information on how to sell a coin collection. Unfortunately, there is not an easy method of selling it unless the individual has a trusted individual that is knowledgeable in coin collections and can take care of the process for him. Otherwise, the individual must do a lot of homework to find just the right person or company to buy the coin collection. One of the first steps in how to sell a coin collection is to determine what coins are in the collection and what they are each worth. Sometimes the coin collection will contain only one type of coin, some of which are not worth much in themselves but are worth something when in a multitude. With this situation, the individual will not want to spend all of his time counting thousands of coins. The solution is to find out what the coins weigh and then find a scale on which the coins can be accurately weighed to determine the amount that there are in the pile. If there is more of a variety in the coins, then the individual must use books and experts to determine the types of coins in the collection and what their possible worth might be. This is one of the hardest parts for a novice in how to sell a coin collection since they are not familiar with the coins and will not be as able to determine if the coin is in mint condition or if it has flaws that are barely visible to the naked eye.

Creative Ways To Sell A Coin Collection

21310574975_e3ab06a0.jpgThere are different ways to sell a coin collection, such as posting it online, selling it at an online marketplace, taking it to a coin collector’s store, or going to a flea market to sell the coins. There are different types of coins that can be collected, some that are worth more than others, such as the coin collecting penny, versus a rare coin from another country. There are some coin collections that are full of coins that are not of much value and are more difficult to sell, while others may have taken years to accumulate and are full of rare finds that many different collectors would envy. Ideas

In finding different ways to sell a coin collection, individuals should look for the best way that suits them. There are some individuals that are very attached to the coin collection and could not bear to part with it without meeting the buyer face to face to see how the collection will be used. There are others who may have inherited the coin collection and are not as particular who purchases it as long as they get a fair price for the collection. These issues will help to determine the way to sell the coin collection that is best for each particular seller. Whatever way to sell the coin collection is chosen, the individual must first take inventory of the collection so that the buyers can be very clear on what coins they will be purchasing. This will rule some buyers out who are not interested in certain coins in the collection, or if they are not able to afford the type of collection that is being offered for sale. The individual should also determine if the way to sell the coin collection is in pieces, with the different groups of coins being sold separately by type, or if the entire collection should be sold as one piece. Regardless, the individual must know what is in the collection so that the buyers can be informed and also so that he can determine if he is getting a fair offer on the collection. In the different ways to sell the coin collection, there is almost always a need for the buyer to see pictures of the collection, so this is another step that must be taken. There are magnifiers that can help in the displaying of the coins for photographing them, as well as different lighting techniques that can help to display the coins to their best effect.

A Brief History of Quilting

f_21310575717_20.jpgThe art of quilting is not something new to this world, it has been around for centuries, but still there is no confirmation about the exact origin. According to the historians is that the history of quilting, piecing and applique was widely used for clothing and decorating stuff at home in ancient times. There is a common belief that quilting originated in China and Egypt at the same time. The oldest quilted garment found till now dates back to somewhere around 3400 BC.

Back in the 11th century, the crusaders picked up a type of quilting from the Middle East and brought it back to Europe. During that time, quilted piece of cloth was used by the Knights to give them extra cushion under their armor.

The Romans were the pioneers in introducing quilted bedding, which was used as mattress. Europeans got hold with this idea and they stuffed sack between two-combined mattress. It was in the 15th century when the Europeans found quilting as a necessity when they were troubled by cold winds in the winter season.

The very first quilts were made of few layers of cloth that was attached together with running stitches. Quilt Frames came into existence as it was difficult to stitch many layers of cloth together. Europeans, blessed with these frames started to create quilts that were more decorative, more finely stitched.

19th century marked a great period of quilting in Europe and America. People in villages would come together and make one or more quilts in an afternoon. Women were very pleased with this as they could come out of the boundaries of their home and could contribute in doing something useful.

Blending Card Making and Scrap Booking Techniques – Have You Tried It?

11310575716_24.jpgI don’t know about you, but I used to think I needed to keep my scrapbooking supplies separate from my stamping supplies, and vice versa. I had a craft bag for stamping and card making projects and a craft bag for scrapbooking projects. I wanted to be sure my photos were scrapped with archival quality materials only to ensure their long and undamaged life. Many stamping supplies were not photo safe a few years ago but that is no longer so true.
These days, many stamping supplies are billed as acid free, though I am still wary of those that are not lignin free and buffered when it comes to using them around my photos.
I think the main thing is to isolate your photos from materials that may not be archival but there is no reason you cannot use them on the pages themselves.
Many cardmaking techniques can be beautifully adapted to scrapbooking.

One such idea that has found favor with many educators is introducing the game of bingo in their classes. Creating and Using Flash Cards to Teach Your Baby to Read

Once you have decided what words you would like to begin teaching your baby, you can start making your cards. Let’s say you choose to start with body parts. Get your card stock, no smaller than 5×8 inches, and in red or black marker, in lowercase letters, write the word head on your card. Be sure to leave plenty of white space around your word. Never crowd the letters on the card. For example, you have probably already used embossing (both dry and heat embossing) on a scrapbook layout. Making borders, special embellishments and dry embossing around a special photo mat are just a couple of ways you could use this technique.
Faux metal embellishments also look very special on an album page. I find people are usually very impressed when they see these images!
If you have ever made inchies or twinchies, you have probably already thought of moving beyond a card face to use them as album accents. ATCs can also be used in a layout.
Iris folding can look wonderful as an enhancement to photos and you can even make a whole scene with iris folding to complement a special event.
You can make your own stamped embellishments also by stamping and colouring an image, then cutting it out to be included in your scrapbook.
I’ve seen some beautiful stamped butterflies on acetate lately that have really lifted a layout (or a card, for that matter!)
Add additional journalling space by making a little card to attach to your page. Sometimes I have even added mini books to a layout that needs lots of journalling.
Try rows of paper piercing to make borders, embellish photo mats, and make other special embellishments come alive on your pages.
Once you start thinking about it, most techniques for card making can also be used for making scrapbooking pages. If you have not already tried it, I hope I have inspired you to blend your techniques together in new ways.
Do feel free to ask me about other techniques I may not have shown yet, or to upload a picture of a project you have completed to show how to marry your cardmaking and scrapbooking skills and therefore be an inspiration to others.
